Effect of Tween 80 on the Corrosion Inhibition of Mild Steel

in Neutral and Acidic Media

Abstract

A series of different concentrations of Tween 80 (T80) in distilled water (neutral medium), and in HCl (acidic medium) was prepared. The surface tension at 202C was measured and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) was detected. The corrosion properties of mild steel were studied by measuring the weight loss in T80/H2O system and T80/HCl/H2O system. The surface morphology of mild steel samples of the above system was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that, the inhibition efficiency reached to 93.0% and 88.2% at CMC in neutral and acidic media, respectively. The results of SEM showed that, T80 formed good protective film on the mild steel surface at CMC in both neutral and acidic media.
