Synthesis of Three Arm Star Polymers of Glycidyl Methacrylate and
Hydroxyethyl-Methacrylate via ATRP

Three arm star polymers of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were prepared via ATRP by using 1, 3, 5-(2’-bromo-2’-methyl-propionato) benzene trifunctional initiator (I). Bipyridin (bpy) and N, N, N’, N’-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMED) ligands were involved in such polymerization processes. CuBr/CuBr2 were actively used together to suppress the uncontrolled fast polymerization of both monomers. The ideal CuBr/CuBr2 percent was found as 10/1 in anisole or methanol in case of GMA and HEMA, respectively. 1HNMR, TEM and DSC were used to identify the structures of the formed polymers.
