Thermal Degradation of ABA Type Poly(dicyclohexyl itaconate) Block Copolymers Having Propylene Oxide Units

The thermal degradation of poly(dicyclohexyl itaconate) -b- (propylene oxide) (PDCHI -b- PPO) block copolymers and segmented homopolymers has been investigated by dynamic thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) methods in the nitrogen atmosphere. The data of the TG measurements were used in the Freeman-Carroll method and activation energies for thermal decomposition were calculated. The Tm and DH values were obtained based on the results of DTA measurements. Although the activation energy of homo PDCHI is higher than that of homo PPO, thermal stability of some block copolymers are higher than those of segmented homopolymers. This behavior, thus, indicates that the PPO chain length in block copolymers affects the thermal stability of the samples.
